Galvanized vs. Stainless Steel vs. FRP Exhaust Fans

The material of an industrial exhaust fan matters because different environments create different demands.

Galvanized steel

Galvanized construction is widely used for general industrial and agricultural ventilation.

The zinc coating provides corrosion protection while maintaining a practical balance between cost and durability.

The appropriate coating thickness and overall construction quality should be considered rather than simply asking whether a fan is “galvanized.”

Stainless steel

Stainless steel is useful when corrosion resistance and cleanability are important.

For MX Cooling applications, stainless-steel fans may be available in different grades, including 201 and 304 stainless steel.

304 is generally preferred where greater corrosion resistance is required, while 201 can be considered where environmental demands and budget are less demanding.

The correct grade depends on the actual environment.

FRP / fiberglass

FRP fans are particularly interesting for environments where corrosion resistance is a major concern.

Fiberglass-reinforced construction can be appropriate for certain chemically aggressive or highly corrosive environments.

There is no universal “best” material

The right question is:

Which material is appropriate for the environment?

Consider:

  • humidity
  • salt exposure
  • chemicals
  • cleaning procedures
  • temperature
  • dust
  • expected service conditions
  • budget

Material selection should therefore be part of the application assessment rather than a purely cosmetic decision.
